"Fair Market Value"

Many physicians take employed hospital positions believing it is a perfect option to focus on their patients while a larger organization manages the distracting, non-patient care practice issues. What our colleagues often find, however, is a system focused on profit and not on patient care. These physicians find themselves trapped in a system demanding more and more uncompensated time in the form of EMR work, seemingly endless clinical inbox management, and frequent 24 hour coverage of emergency rooms and hospitals. These call obligations interrupt clinics, scheduled operating room procedures, sleep, family time, social time, and time off. The stress, litigation risk, and disruption to quality of life imposed by call coverage is rarely a concern to hospital systems. This time is often uncompensated and, when it is, the compensation is rarely appropriate. Simultaneously, physicians are limited in their compensation by hospitals systems due to conservative interpretations of "Fair Market Value" based on federal laws introduced by a California congressman (Pete Stark, Stark anti kickback laws). Fighting an unfair interpretation of "Fair Market Value" at your current hospital employment will be a losing battle. Rather, demand "Fair Market Value" quality of life.
